It really irritates me that people rave about this streak of piss, let's
face it the only reason he's in the England squad is because he plays for the RS, nobody was interested when he played for Southampton. Someone actually pointed out that all he does is stand in one albeit the right place when the ball is in the opposition half. Someone of his height you'd expect the lanky twat to be able to head the ball and command the area in the air, how many times has he powered a header towards goal from a distance as far as the pen spot. He hasn't, it just bounces off his face from inside the six yard box. He doesn't create anything, the only reason this guy's goal to game rate look's so good apart from the quality (or lack of it) of the opposition is that our guys behind him are so adept at sticking the ball somewhere that he can get his face in the way or trip over it and thus send it into the back of the net. The guy can't control the football it just get's lost inbetween his feet then snatched away by the nearest defender, it's like watching a baby giraffe play football. I'm so frustrated at the end of an England match after seeing him squander chance after chance. I believe with a different guy up front the score lines recently would have been greater. First choice should always be Rooney but why Crouch, because his height adds another angle on Englands game I will bet everything I own that there are smaller men than him that pose a much bigger threat in the air. First choice for me would have to be Rooney and Ashton/AJ. I just spend the whole match willing him to run into the cross bar and hurt himself is that wrong? :-/ |

The fact is that he has now got himself an excellent scoring record and, regardless of the opposition, has forced Steve McClaren to start him. The opposition though is key. He can get the better of mediocre defenders because he is built in such a unique way that they simply don't having the quality of coaching available to know how to deal with him. Even in the Premiership last season, 6 goals in 32 appearences isn't showing how international form can translate. As you said, his aerial ability is terrible for someone of his size. How many times will we see him grabbing a defender so he can gain some height? His control is excellent for someone so ungainly; but then it's not world-class either. He is an excellent option to use against poorer opposition and his scoring record against them completely justifies him being in every England squad, but we will need truly world-class strikers when it comes to the finals of major tournaments against good opposition. It's just a pity that appears to be only Owen and Rooney at the moment. |
