What's wrong with Bobcats?

The founder / owner of the team is named Bob. That is unforgivable to
me.

This brings to mind a project I've been dreaming of for years: quantifying the "coolness" of team names. Something like: A carnivore gets one point, a herbivore gets zero. A movie tie-in gets minus 10 points. An animal with a dangerous weapon attached to its body gets a plus 5. An industry tie-in (like the Rockets or Sonics) gets minus 2. Naming your team after a piece of clothing: minus 10 points, unless the team actually wears that piece of clothing -- then it's plus 20 points. An ethnic stereotype gets plus 20 points -- minus 10 billion if they use the stereotype as a mascot, and minus googolplex if the fans use the stereotype as a point of departure for some lame intimidation thing they do with their arms, like miming a scalp raid.

I would like to present you with the the first annual Bulls Usenet
Lonny Baxter Memorial "Give It A Shot!" Scholarship to pursue this
project. The scholarship consists of little other than good wishes and
a general willingness to read any spreadsheets you may compile with
your results. But that's something!

Hell yes. While the tie-in is rather weak I've always thought the Bulls were a nod to Chicago's days as "meat packer to the world".

We did have the Packers here - the NBA team that was named the Zephers (Windy
City reference) for one year, then the Packers, then the Washington Bullets.

As I recall, perhaps incorrectly....

You'd figure there's gotta be some high school team out there called the Redskins or something who approach the whole thing with some sensitivity.

Pekin Chinks here in Illinois - changed their nickname some years ago, don't
know to what.

The NCAA let Bradley off the hook with the Braves after the school
dropped the Native American imagery and "demonstrated its ability to
provide an environment that is not hostile or abusive and one that is
consistent with the NCAA constitution and commitment to diversity,
respect and sportsmanship." How does a team name celebrating an
abstract emotional concept score?

(Kind of pointless anyway, because the city of Peoria police and
government are still using this surreal day-glo tri-color Indian head
with a feather on top as the logo on their cars and offices.)

the most fortuitous: Minnesota Lakers become LA Lakers. No lakes to speak of in LA, but LA is first two letters of LAKERS, soit almost makes sense.

Plus, the players are 70 percent water.

The Fort Wayne Pistons becoming the Detroit Pistons was also an
exercise in non-adjustment.
