I guess guys like boyer, foster, stockman and devine will all be in
spring training fighting for maybe two slots. You figure if they are
going with Wickman, McBride and (yuk) Yates as 3 returning, plus they go
out and get an overpriced but necessary setup man, that's 4 slots.
Figure they start the year with 12 man staff, that leaves 3 slots. But
one of those slots will likely go to a long-relief/spot starter guy like
Cormier, leaving two slots for everybody else.

They'll show up as soon as the Yankees/Mets are eliminated. Right now
they have bigger fish to fry.

so, so this is just a guess.

I have every belief that Horacio will be non-tendered if he can't be traded. Trading Horacio seems a lot like trading Estrada last year. You don't really expect to get anything good in return for him, but you also really don't want to pay for his arbitration years. And Horacio is 2nd-year arb eligible this year, I'd estimate mid-$3M or so. Trade him for this year's equiavelent of Villareal+Cormier and I'd call it a win.
You really think so? for some reason I think the team thinks Horacio is more valuable than do you and I. I can see them easily chalking up this year's mediocrity to injuries and penciling him in at #5 for next year. If his cost is $3m, though, that probably is worth it if you expect him to be healthy. A healthy Horacio will likely give you 180 or so innings of 4.50 baseball. On the free agent market that kind of performance will cost you $7-8m (see Ortiz, Lieber, Benson, etc.). The key is if you think he's healthy. The key also is if you think lance Cormier can give you the same for much less.

Thomson is much better than Ramirez and shouldn't be more expensive. I
may be wrong but Ramirez for me is nothing more than Replacement Player
from VORP definition. He has 80K/67BB! It's disastrous rate.

Since leaving Colorado Thomson has had one season where he's pitched
well and 3.5 seasons of mediocrity and/or injury. He's now 33 years old.

Excepting onelucky partial season, Horacio has performed about as well
as Thomson over that same time span, mediocre with injuries.

So I suppose I'd go with whichever one you might think is more likely to
be healthy next year. But to me they look about interchangeable.
