Is Hendry a lame duck? Do the Cubs have enough stability in the front office to pull the trigger on hiring a manager? |

Lame duck, possibly. Hiring a manager will be fine if there is not any major corporate shakeups planned in the near future. -- Scott We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid. I would see Hendry's situation as a bit of a problem area for a manager considering the Cubs. He will be aware of the pressure on Hendry and the ticking clock. Would he be able to get a 3-year contract if he wanted one? (That means his contract would be longer than Hendry's). If he is given one, and Hendry is fired after next season and a new gm is brought in, what does that do to the manager's position? The new gm would almost certainly want his own manager. Trying to put myself into a prospective manager's position, it would seem to be a pretty shaky ship to board. However, judging from what I read, there are a number of guys interested in the Cubs, so maybe it's not a problem. |

If Hendry is a lame duck, he will not hire a manager for himself. He will either hire a guy the higher ups want - or he will just search until he is replaced. There are many scenarios. Here are a few. Cubs plan to have a strong manager with a GM for an errand boy. Hendry was an errand boy for MacPhail and will be an errand boy for new CEO. Hendry was an errand boy for MacPhail but will now be allowed to really run the show. The Cubs are looking for a new general manager and just haven't decided on the right one yet. Hendry was running the show before and will continue to do so (and mangement is really stupid). ray heitmann |

If he isn't, he should be. I don't understand why they didn't fire Hendry when they let Baker go. I've never thought Baker (or MacPhail, FTM) was the problem. Hendry's been the problem and the weak link all along, IMNSHO. Quote:
They need to dump their GM and hire a new one before they even THINK about hiring a new manager. It's stupid to hire a new manager, turn around and fire the GM, and bring in a new GM that the new manager will butt heads with. --- Cory |

Why? If your opinion is not so humble, then I assume you must have substantial and numerous examples and rationales to back that up. Feel free to include examples that specifically show why Baker and MacPhail were not the problems. Also, you could point out why none of the successes under Hendry's reign were not the result of his work and knowledge. We simply don't know what went on behind the scenes, or what the power distribution was in the Cub front office. Ray has outlined a number of plausible scenarios and there are still others. Unfortunately, we have to read the wisps in the smokescreens and guess from them what's really going on. It's a bit like Kremlinology. I can understand why WGN and the Trib are useless in this regard. They've canned a couple of big fish (Stone & Caray) and censored a lowly beat reporter for straying outside the parameters of the Official Line. On the other hand, the Sun Times & the other media outlets could be doing a much better job. They don't seem to do much digging. They might be afraid that they'll get cut off from the informational tit if they poke around too much. -- barutanseijin@gmail.com |

Hendry may nhave gotten stronger or weaker. We don't know.
If he was being micromanaged by McPhail and drug down by his hire Baker, he might be in a better position now. He also may already have been secretly fired or demoted and given a bonus to find his replacement. "Gary S.
