(1) He's one of the best hitters in the league...he's a hugerisk, because of his age, but he was basically at an All Star level in'06, even counting the reduced playing time.
Because he can't play enough, he means that an incredibly substandard player will have to play for him all the days he can't play.
Well, it means that a Todd Linden type is going to play. Bonds for 120games and Linden for 40 is just better than, say, a Reggie Sanders typefor 150 (plus Linden for 10).

Except that we're not going to get Reggie Sanders.

And, (2), if the team is going to be bad, which is highly likely, then those "idiot" fans mean that his contractwill make money for the Giants, which in turn means they can buy moregood players. Hoo-fricking-rah for them.Did you read what you're responding to? Why is it a bad thing for theGiants to buy more good players?

Because while the theory is all well and good, that's not really what is
going to happen.

Bonds was way better than Thomas last year Yawn. Do you ever get tired of talking about Bonds as if the whole STEROIDS THING doesn't matter, as a completely dispassionate numerical analysis on a spreadsheet? Why does the steroids thing matter?

I'm not going to even dignify that with a response. If you refuse to
acknowledge it as a reality into why the Giants might not re-sign him,
there is no explanation that will suffice for you.
Quote:
And Frank, like most major players, got more at-bats tha Bonds did, so whatever difference there is in their OPS gets balanced out BY ALL THE GAMES BONDS DOESN'T PLAY IN.Thomas had all of 66 more PAs than Bonds did last year (2006). He had90 more PAs in 2005. Bonds had 300 more PAs in 2004.And of course if we're talking about an AL team choosing between themfor DH, then Bonds is likely to be able to play a bit more than he didas a LF.It's just not true that Bonds plays less than Frank Thomas.

I guess 66 more PA's means nothing.

BTW, weren't you going to leave until Felipe was gone? What the hell have you been doing hanging around this group for the past year?

Contributing a hell of a lot more positive input than you, Greggy boy. BTW,
I don't remember making any such statement.

I've resisted this until now, but as of now, Greg Lentz is in my killfill.
Nothing of any note to add at all. Nothing but bitching, moaning, and
whining. You used to add some insightful commentary, but those days are
gone. You've merely become a poison pen.

Old argument by now, but...the fact that the NL, and especially the NLWest, were lousy *made* the Giants marginal contenders; it was part ofwhat Sabean should have been considering. In a way, it was bad luck; ifthere had been a couple of obvious >90 win teams in the division after2004, then Sabean might well have started rebuilding then. As it was,IMO it would have been foolish to ignore the opportunity.(We all agree, of course, that he did a lousy job of exploiting theoppportunity).

I think you've hit on something here.

One of Sabean's good qualities: he is able to recognize problem areas,
he knows when it's time to take advantage of the problems of others,
and he isn't afraid to move on those advantages.

One of Sabean's bad qualities: his idea of what makes a good player
doesn't seem to be very useful.

I guess this is why I'm so pessimistic about the Giants' short-term
future. People say "give Sabean a chance, he'll be working in a
different framework now," but Sabean has always known how to work in
whatever framework he's given. He knew that it was appropriate to
build around Bonds the last few years, for instance. But his idea of
building around Bonds is to give Randy Winn a 3-year extension. And I
don't see how that kind of player evaluation is going to change, just
because the word from above is to go spend some money on young guys.
Sabean is going to sign a bunch of 28-year-old Randy Winns.
