I think that whatever optimism I may have had concerning the Sixers' season has already been dashed after reading this: [from P. Inquirer] "There's more emphasis, and that's something we need," guard Willie Green added. "Mo and the coaching staff are doing a great job of saying, 'This is how we're going to play this year.' We're going to play defense and we're going to rebound and we're going to play together, and if somebody doesn't want to do that, they're not going to get a chance to play." The philosophy, which Cheeks emphasized "is not a new defense," was the focus of summer meetings among Cheeks, his coaching staff and the front office headed by president and general manager Billy King. *** Are King and Cheeks trying to be the Bush/Rumsfeld tandem of the NBA? So much ideology and empty rhetoric, such little analysis or strategy. It appears that not only are King and Cheeks pushing the same platitudes as last year (play harder bums! teamwork!) but they're now elevating it to the level of a game-plan. It's nice that the braintrust of said summer meetings among the coaching staff and management apparently involved a lot of nose-picking and head-scratching until someone came up with...."Ummm. Let's play better!" Oh, and since they decided not to change anything, did anyone notice all those 4th quarter collapses, perhaps a result of aging players already playing hard but wearing out from too many minutes? Maybe they should have considered using those exceptions to add players who could give more of a lift off the bench than...Alan Henderson. |

While I think there are better ways to use it, at least you seem to define a clear strategy and method of implementation. I find you more creditable than the management of both the Sixers and the United States government. Cheers. -IK |

Ahhh, let's not over-react to one exhibition game halfway around the world.
Especially a game that would have been won merely be shooting fouls at the baseline percentage. Let's not assess team talent on how smart or stupid are the Sixer interview comments! ----- Kurt Straub "Ian Kognitow" <covanus@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1160076838.192080.326170@m73g2000cwd.googlegr oups.com... I agree. We should evaluate the team on if they can win games. From that point of view I dont know why they'd be any better then last year, unless their young players improve to another level, which is not an unreasonable expectation. Quote:

Well, my original post was before the exhibition, so I'm not reading too much into that, particularly with no video and without even being able to find a boxscore. Anyway, while I'm not measuring 'talent' per se by my previous comments, I do think that it is useful to criticize such comments. First of all, with no significant player movement (excepting the possibility of Carney), all one can really look for is evidence that the team is changing strategy. Unfortunately, the people *most* responsible for implementing such change have been saying directly that they plan to do nothing of the sort. -IK |
