Seriously, if I'm a RS fan in addition to his contributions as the mostdominant pitcher I've ever seen for a short stretch (and like you I sawKoufax and Gibson in the 1960s), I'd be forever thankful that Peteystrongly lobbied Theo to sign the Devil long before anyone else gotwind of the news. Believe me Cashman paid dearly for that "slip up."(The Yanks had Nick Johnson and Giambi so I have no idea why Ortizwould've signed with the Yanks anyway)

Yes, I've baited the diva haters with that point a few times <g>.
Called Theo on his cell from his dinner with Ortiz in the DR. Ortiz
obviously was blocked in NYY --- he was blocked in Boston by the other
Giambi, but I guess that was not so big a worry for Ortiz <g>.

I've been as surprised as most everyone on how good Ortiz has become,
but I was pretty happy with the signing at the time b/c I had heard of
his reputation in the DR as a super slugger. I'm sure Pedro found it
almost unbelievable that Ortiz was released by MN.
