that's one example, but doesn't cover everything. for example, i doubt that orel hershiser would have become the pitcher he was if he'd started under wedge - it took a manager like lasorda who motivated him by nicknaming him "bulldog" to build up his confidence. and lasorda had a stretch where he had 5-6 rookies of the year in a row.Alright, I'll buy that. I guess it's possible that Phillips just neededthe right coach; maybe Wedge wasn't the right guy. I did have him thehighest on my list of "guys who would do much better with some differentscenery."

in retrospect it was a mistake to pencil in phillips as the starter.
but i suspect that once wedge got it in his head that phillips was a
headstrong guy, phillips was gone unless belliard had suffered a major
injury in the preseason.

i guess my take is that if we can identify players in this category, they might be better served by developing in the minors under a manager whose priority is more on talent development (and this may go beyond physical skills) rather than winning.Agreed, thanks for the perspective.

i'd also feel a lot better knowing that we had somebody in place
either as a player or coach with definite cross-cultural strengths - i
don't know if anybody realizes this, but the current roster includes
10 guys from venezuela, the dominican republic & puerto rico, mostly
under 25;. victor martinez is 28, betancourt is 31. and they have a
grand total of 14 years experience in the majors. yes, they all spent
time in the minors, but it couldn't hurt to have somebody helping you
acclimate to life in the big leagues.
