.... a 45 HR guy. Tell me Luis Gonzalez coming up in some of those RISP
situations wouldn't have helped. They need some clutch hitting. Guys that don't choke in pressure situations. And they need some toughness. Right now they are as laid-back as can be and it don't work. Trash a lockerroom. Get in a fist fight with a teammate. Do something. That's the kind of players they need. Keep Barfield, Gonzalez, Bard and Bowen. Piazza if he works for a reasonable sum. Roberts ditto. Everyone else - including Paper-Hands - is expendable. Need to get a real ace. If Zito fits in financially then yay! Peavey needs to go - he doesn't have the cojones to be an ace No. 1 type guy. And of course a manager who has some fire. Iceberg |

At least your not just bashing this time. You have some decent
suggestions. Most people would agree with a large part of this assesment, with the exception of Peavy. He has the nads to be the guy, he just has to pitch a shut-out to often to get the wins and not even Clemens does that. So your off base on this one. Gonzo isn't the answer because of his age. We need a power hitting outfielder and third baseman. Whether it's Giles going and getting someone in right or not. Dano |

Gonzo might be a short-term (read: one year) solution, but I'd like to see a power bat (especially a RH one) still in the prime of his career. There's a FA that's going to be available named Alfonso Soriano. Assuming that the Padres were serious about not bringing back Roberts (and frankly, it's unlikely that he will ever come close to his "career" year again... or even stay healthy for an entire season two years in a row), I sure wouldn't mind seeing Soriano out there in LF, cranking 40+ HR's a year. His price tag will be high, but the huge Klesko, Park, etc. contracts will finally be off the books and they should have more wiggle room to go after a high-ticket FA. Zito would be a great acquisition as well to anchor the rotation. It's unlikely that the Padres would be able to fit more than one high-priced FA (if that...) into the budget though, so if we could even pick up one of those guys it would be a solid move. |
