I'm not sure that judging a reliever by ERA, particularly a middle-reliever,
is an accurate method to evaluate success rate. Many people think that Geary had a successful 2006. I remember him giving up runs during middle relief. He was pulled by Manuel before the runs were charged against him. Hitters batted .287 against him. At best, he's "less-bad" than the Phillies remaining relievers. |

If a baserunner that reaches base off of "Pitcher A" scores off of "Pitcher
B" (after "Pitcher A" was relieved), the earned run goes against "Pitcher A". That's why they have the "inherited runner" stats. Regarding Geary... in 91.1 innings, he gave up 30 earned runs (2.96 ERA). He inherited 40 runners, of which 13 scored (33%). Geary finished 2nd on the Phils in pitcher VORP (Value Over Replacement Player) with a VORP of 27.6, Myers was 1st with a 40.8 VORP, Hamels 3rd with 22.9. Here are the Phillies VORP numbers on the Baseball Prospectus website: http://www.baseballprospectus.com/t...?stats&team=PHI Not surprisingly, Abe Nunez finished last in hitter VORP with -18.3.
