The little MN mini-riot in studentville is nowhere near the riots they had in Detroit...or the NBA fan brawl they had in Detroit...or the murder rates they've had in Detroit...etc. Face it, Detroit is just an ugly place to live. From Wikipedia: Detroit's city's crime-ridden sections have brought it notoriety. Despite improvement in recent years, Detroit's crime figures are often among the highest in the U.S. The city is currently listed as the most dangerous city with more than 500,000 by the Morgan Quitno's statistics, but comes after Camden, New Jersey overall. Detroit is consistently in the top five for homicide rates. Murders peaked at 714 in 1974 (garnering Detroit the nickname "Murder City", a play on "Motor City") though the highest murder rate was recorded in 1991, when there were 615 homicides and the city's population was just over a million, which factors into a murder rate of roughly 60 per 100,000. - Scott Smith: scott@sludgereport.org Books Blog: http://scottsbooks.blogspot.com Blue States Rising: http://www.bluestaterising.blogspot.com |

My change in allegiance is prompted by the riots that followed the last two NCAA hockey championships, which resulted in thousands of fans running amok, destroying property, burning buildings, destroying police cars and even throwing a concrete block through the window of a fire truck summoned to the scene to fight the fires in Dinkytown. The public response to these wanton acts of violence has been as disgraceful as the acts themselves - smug and apathetic. Mini-riot? Bwahahaha! "thousands of fans running amok" "destroying property, burning buildings" This would hardly be called a mini-riot.IMO...................LOL It makes the NBA fan brawl look like a snow ball fight between teenagers. Yes, Detroit is a hard town to live in but as this list will show, you stated NY, LA, Chicago and San Antonio were so much better. Detroit trails all the cities you claim to be safer!!! This is not 1974 anymore, Detroit is trying to improve. Every major city has it's share of problems like this but you could be a poster boy for "Dinkytown". Quit blubbering about your beloved Twins being swept. I was through Dinkytown the following day, it was not nearly as bad looking as the downtown Detroit area on ANY given day. Also from Wikipedia regarding Detroit: Abandoned and burned out shells of buildings are a frequent sight, with some 16,037 empty houses recorded in 1999. The city lacks funding to demolish the properties and the homes are often used for the production, sale, and use of illicit drugs, with drug gangs such as Young Boys Inc. Abandoned buildings are often left to the elements with the city government having no funds for restoration or removal. The city has faced hundreds of arsons, often in the city's many abandoned homes, each year on Devil's Night, the evening before Halloween. The Angel's Night campaign, launched in the late 1990s, draws many volunteers to patrol the streets during Halloween week. The effort has reduced arson: while there were 810 fires set in 1984, this was reduced to 142 in 1996. Quote:
