Default why aren't the dodgers through

The only teams which can catch LA now are the Giants
and the Astos. Even if all 3 teams finish 92-70, the Astros
have lost their season series against both LA and SF.
Shouldn't LA and SF then qualify for the post-season
leaving Houston out? If SF finish the season at 92-70, they
would have overtaken LA in their season series, so they
would be NL-West champs.

But espn.com is talking about a one-game playoff betn
LA and SF to decide NL West champion if both
teams finish 92-70. When people were discussing the
possibility of NYY and Boston finishing with identical
records, it was being stressed that Boston would
win the division because they had won the season series.

MLB only uses those one-game playoffs to send somebody home. If both
teams will make the playoffs regardless who wins the playoff, they just
break the tie based on the season series for seeding purposes.
