Default Major signing

The Braves traded minor league pitcher Rico Rodriguez to Kansas City
on Monday for outfielder Matt Diaz, who will compete for a spot on the
major league roster.

Diaz, who turns 28 in March, batted .371 with 14 homers and 56 RBIs in
65 games last season for the Royals' Class AAA affiliate in Omaha, and
he batted .281 -- including .370 against lefties -- with two triples,
a home run and nine RBIs in 89 at-bats in stints with the major league
club.

this is actually a very good deal by and for atlanta. it flips an
easily replaceable commodity for a needed part. matt diaz will never
be a superstar in the major leagues, certainly, but he is more or less
a right-handed kelly johnson and gives the braves a true platoon
option in left field.

this feels like a precursor move.

Honestly, what's not to love about this deal? A right-handed, 28 y.o.,
cheap outfielder who's put up OPSs of 900, 948, and 1057 at AAA over the
last three years and yet, for some reason, has gotten a total of 119 major
league at bats over that time (in which he was unspectacular but not
horrible). Granted, the first two of those came in a great hitter's park
but the 1057 last year at Omaha (which has been very neutral in previous
years) is legit.

To me it feels like we just got the lefty-mashing half of the LF
platoon...and we already had the right-handed half in either Johnson or
Langerhans. I suspect that, if there is a major move, it will be to acquire
pitching of some sort.

Exactly, with one of Johnson/Langerhans now available to be moved for
pitching. Plenty of teams could still use a real CF, and Langerhans
fills that job quite nicely...

Well, you know that the Royals' lineup is a pretty tough nut to crack.

You may be right on this. if LF is nailed down, and I think they're handing
RF to Frenchie (I have serious reservations about that), that seals most all
of the positions.
