Howdy Boys...
So, looks like...Fred is getting a new TV? Welp, first things first... how far are you going to be seated from the television? Second... however big you think you want... go the next size up. Third... be sure to get 1920x1080. I waited an awful long time for these sets to finally come out the right way before I bought them, beware some of the smaller sets and alot of LCD's are 1366x768... do NOT get one of those. I got a SMOKIN' deal on my set - the 71" top-line Samsung DLP. So SHOP AROUND. I got mine from Vann's. Also, the television will only be as good as the signal you feed it. DVD is okay, HDTV is better, and HD-DVD will be best. If you primarily watch standard def, be prepared for disappointment. But if you can get the INHD or Discovery HD channels, or perhaps Chronicles of Riddick on HD-DVD... hoo boy. Oh - and sports looks DAMN NICE. Basketball is toughest - the floors are really tough on digital compression. Saw Miami/FSU the other night, looked DAMN good. I strongly recommend the Samsung DLP line. They have a new DLP out that uses color LEDs instead of the color wheel (long, involved technical story) that you may want to check out. Note, some DLP sets use a Faroudja scalar that has an interpolation problem that drops every other line on certain kinds of signals - Mitsubishi's did, for instance. Also, be wary of plasma and LCD. Eventually, everything will go to LCD-like displays, but for now... I'd get DLP. Had to have my light engine replaced last week - their is what I consider a factory design defect in the light tunnel that causes a slight shigt in the mirror guides, causing a slighly out of color mask on the far edge of the screen. Replaced without problem, under warranty, but be advised... Venger P.S. I can't fully hide from the Cowboys, I live in D/FW after all, I am practically inundated with it... still, it sickens me that he'll be taking the field for us... I hear Mark David Karr runs a mean skinny post route, maybe our cryptkeeper owner should sign him... P.S.2. And have any of you seen that Papa Johns commercial where Jerry shows up holding a pizza and coke at a guys doorstep? Crikey! Doesn't even look human anymore, it's to the point where Michael Jackson is saying "Damn, that's took much surgery Jerry..." The Sony SRXD KDS60A2000 is the best large screen TV out there right now and worth every penny. Blows away any DLP, LCD and Plasma set IMO. For those holding out right now, new technologies are coming in the near future like SED and AMOLED. Truth be told though, if size is not an issue, nothing can touch a good CRT. |

I looked at the Sony's, but too many issues with sets. Green Blob being the biggest for now. Quote:
Can't agree with that really... too many issues, especially when you get to the big 60-70" sets. Convergence, keystoning, pincushioning, man to hell with that. I had a 61" Sony XBR, real nice set, but I know CRT limitations in and out... Venger |

Last I heard she was in Plano pining away for Wesley Clark... Anyways, I ABSOLUTELY recommend you go to www.avsforum.com and read about any potential set. I posted a review of my DLP there, you can read owner threads about every unit made. Venger |

I should have specifically said direct view. I hate RP CRT TV's. It's like you suddenly became nearsighted. Now what's this about "green blobs"? And understand I singled out Sony's SRXD (LCoS) technology TV's. I think they're in a class by themselves right now. Terrific blacks, contrast, no rainbow effects (DLP), no motion anomalies (LCD). Check them out. |

I've seen the LCOS sets, didn't seem particularly bright to me... and I am still wary of any technology that requires convergence... Venger |
