Hey! Now there's an idea! Actually didn't they do this during one of the strike years? And I believe some minor leagues still run their playoffs this way also. ...Gives some hope for next year anyway. |

It all depends on what the "brainless trust" does with our talented players in the off-season. The handwriting is on the wall for Castillo and I figure Jason Bay has maybe 1 more year in the 'Burgh before he will be trade-bait to save on salaries. With McClatchy/Nutting and Littlefield I am pretty certain they will destroy any chemistry that was built in the 2nd half of the season by spring training. |

Another piece of information you might want to enter into the record is this: Series won against teams with a winning record since the All Star Break - 1 Of course finding teams in the National League with winning records isn't easy, but it still doesn't change the fact that the Pirates are still the same bad team they were before the All Star break - they've just been playing more of the bottom tier teams since the break. I'm sure David Littlefield sees progress in beating up on the hapless and broken Cubs as well as the Nationals and Rockies, but nothing changes for the Pirates until they changes these two post All Star break records. Record against teams .500 or better: 9-15 PAS 2006 Astros 0- 6 3-10 Brewers 3- 3 9- 7 Cards 3- 0 6- 9 Cubs 6- 3 9- 6 Reds 2- 4 5- 8 14-16 32-40 On the year the Pirates look even worse not playing .500 or better against any team with a winning record. You just can't make a living beating up on the Cubs. |

There is no silver cloud to find a lining in. The same people do the same stupid thing all year long, every year and fool themselves into thinking things are improving because they selectively chose only a portion of games they want to see. How many times before the All Star break did we hear ... ohhhh things are turning around after the team strung together a few wins only to see them go right back into the crapper? How many players have been anointed the starter based on a 4 week audition in September only to turn into pumpkin the next season when handed the full time job? You can make any argument you choose to about a team or a player when you cherry pick a small part of the entire year to base it on. Bottom line, while the record has improved since the AS break the play on the field has not as the team's offense has fallen from 12th in the national league to 15th and will be last before the season ends. The same problem that has plagued the team for 14 years has not been addressed - no offense. And unless they do something really dramatic in the off season it's going to be worse next year. No offense means no winning season - period. |
