Default Five AAA International League Teams Doing a Major Shuffle

>> The report indicated that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman is
Quote:
looking to move the Triple-A team closer to New York, with Scranton, Pa. -- which is approximately 120 miles west of New York City -- representing a possible destination. The Phillies' Triple-A team has been in Scranton since 1989, but the Dispatch reports that Philadelphia allowed its contract to lapse, opening the door for another team to move in.I know that Allentown is building a stadium for a AAA team. I thought it was supposed to be affiliated with the Phillies. Or maybe the Scranton-Wilkes Barre Red Barron franchise is moving there. Of course, the Mets and Yankees might want to upgrade the Cyclone and SI Yankees to AAA, but I don't think this market would support the high level minor league teams in the shadow of the big club. Maybe if NY only had one MLB team...

The five AAA teams in the International League doing the shuffle are --

New York Yankees (Columbus Clippers)
Washington Nationals (New Orleans Zephyrs)
New York Mets (Norfolk Tides)
Baltimore Orioles (Ottawa Lynx)
Philadelphia Phillies (Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Red Barons)

The Ottawa franchise is moving to Allentown to become the new Phillies AAA
franchise, I believe. Remember, this doesn't involve players, just the minor
league team ownership and team management. The coaches and players are the
property of the major league teams.

I guess I could explain a little bit more. The SWB franchise is owned by the
local government (as is the AA Harrisburg Senator franchise). The Phillies
tired of doing business with the SWB political owners, I believe the story goes,
and didn't renew the deal. So they went looking for an available AAA franchise
and found one for sale in Ottawa, struck a deal with an owner ship team willing
to run the program (Craig Stein, AA Reading Phillies owner, for one) and CS and
his owner group put together a deal with Allentown for a stadium.

At least that's the 50 cent tour as I recall it.

Not sure where the SWB thing will end up.

There always been rumors building a baseball stadium in the NJ Meadowlands
Sports Complex. A major league franchise is out the question, so why not an
AAA club. When is that rail line to the Sports Complex suppose to be finish?

It is not a rumor, a professional baseball stadium is going to be built as
part of Xanadu. There is a chance the Marlins will relocate there. MLB loves
the NY area market, over 18,000,000 people, by far the largest in the
Nation.

The Zephyrs are part of the Pacific Coast League, not the International
League.
