Default Angelos on the protest

Below are Peter Angelos's comments on the protest. I've taken the
liberty of making some well-placed edits:

"Whoever joins that protest [or whoever is named Peter Angelos] has no
comprehension of what it costs to run a baseball team," Angelos said in
a telephone interview from his law office in Baltimore. "When you get
down to facts, putting together a team that can compete in the AL East
means having a payroll between $100-$110 million [or is largely a
function of making sound management decisions that don't include
throwing lots of cash at old, mediocre players]. That money comes from
the consumer, and I [am about to lie now] have chosen to keep ticket
prices to a minimum [in actuality I have chosen to set ticket prices
exactly at what the market will bear given this crappy team]. Nestor
Aparicio is a very unimportant person [not unlike myself] who has
delusions of grandeur [not unlike myself]," Angelos said.

well, if it costs $100 mill to be competitive, how do Oakland and florida and
Minnesota manage to do it? Or isnt that a question we should be asking?
I guess those teams just have to get on by with shrewd management and a lack
of veteran leadership. Oh yeah, and some really decent young players, too.

Oh, but what the hell do I know, anyway??

Cheers,

$100 million is the magic number, baby, because the Blue Jays'
off-season spending spree was VERY fruitful for them. They went from
3rd place to....let me see...3rd place.

Rock on my Canadian brothers!

You know, Angelos' comments reflect pure contempt. These comments are
rather condescending, franky, and he needs some sort of person in his
inner circle to help him be a lil' more media-aware.

These comments will NOT go over well, and will do more to harm his
image than Nasty's protest.

oh, but wait... That hundred megabuck splurge meant that the Jays were
"competitive" for much longer into the season - why, they didnt cease
to be a contender until well into July ... Perhaps Baltimore's Peter
would consider it a success if the O's were close to 500 in June. You know,
you really need to take these steps slowly. After all, look at the Tigers
and how disappointed their fans must be at their late slide. Think how
much better those Detroit fans would have felt if the slide started in
May. Why they'd be completely past their disappointment by now. But we
O's fans don't need to worry about disappointment in the playoffs - or
in the heartbreak of a late season loss in a tight pennant race. No, we
get to see our guys out of the pennant race in the springtime, leaving
us the entire summer to kick back and wonder how long it'll be until
Bedard and Markakis get to the FA gold mine and Tejada starts
California Dreamin'again.

He is a slip-and-fall lawyer by trade. What do you expect?

I'll bet his cut of the luxury tax is 10 to 25 million. Anyone know?

Boy, that plan is really working, isn't it? 5th lowest attendence in
the Majors, lowest for the Os since 1988.

I want to see a team I think has a better than 50-50 chance of winning
a game. That has not been the Orioles, so they're now far down my list
of priorities when deciding what to do with a free day or evening. So,
frankly, ticket prices mean little. I'd pay $50 if I thought they had
a chance to win. As it is, I've consciously not spent any money on the
Orioles in 7 years, and the way Angelos has run this team, it has only
gotten easier.
