There is a difference between RETIRING from broadcasting and just plain
quitting..........you get a pension (usually) when you retire. Not so when you QUIT ( a major delay in the pension if you do). |

Where do you get your facts about Fairly's pension? Fairly was not that good, of course Neihaus is not either; in fact none of the broadcasting team is good. They should all quit. |

Friday, September 22, 2006 Fairly retiring from Mariners booth Player/broadcaster has spent 48 seasons in the major leagues By JOHN HICKEY P-I REPORTER CHICAGO -- Mariners broadcaster Ron Fairly, whose career in baseball spans almost half a century, said Thursday he will retire at the end of the season. Fairly has been a Seattle fixture for 14 seasons, joining the Mariners in 1993 after broadcasting stints with the Angels and the Giants. He's spent the past 27 years in broadcasting after a 21-year playing career as a first baseman and outfielder. "I've been at the playground or at the ballpark my entire life," Fairly said. "I figure I've played in or seen 7,000 games. It's time to take my bat and ball and go home." He played college baseball at USC, and then signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers, with whom he went to four World Series in his first nine years as a player, winning the title three times. "I was in spring training with the Angels, and (club owner) Gene Autry talked to me about broadcasting for KTLA," Fairly said. "I did, and he offered me a three-year contract. I had a one-year contract (with the Angels), so that was an easy decision." He never got the chance to call games for the Mariners in the World Series, and that is probably his one outstanding regret as he calls it quits. "I wish that the Mariners were in the middle of a pennant race now," Fairly said. "That would be the cherry on the top. I'd love to see them win a World Series for the fans who have been so fantastic." Fairly said he will spend much of his newly free time with his grandchildren, although he's going to be able to indulge his passion for playing golf. Still, he leaves with many memories. "I think what I'll miss most is being in the clubhouse," he said. "That's the one thing the fans don't understand; the jokes and the fun in the clubhouse is special. And there has been lots of fun in the booth, too. "I really enjoyed watching Junior (Ken Griffey Jr.) play and watching Edgar (Martinez) swing the bat. Then there was the Big Unit (Randy Johnson), as crazy as he can be. And being around (former manager) Lou Piniella was something else." Fairly recalled many times when he gave Piniella rides home on the instances when Piniella's wife, Anita, would leave the ballpark early. "I'd listen to Lou's rants and raves driving across I-90," he said. "A few times I thought I'd lose my dashboard, he'd hit it so hard." Fairly, 68, has teamed with Dave Niehaus and Rick Rizzs in Seattle. Both of them are expected to return in 2007, and there's no immediate indication what the Mariners will do to replace Fairly. |

I am not privy to any specific facts concerning
Fairly's pension (if there is one).I am speaking about it generically. Most pensions (not all) make you wait if you quit if you do not go through the proper application process.I was making a distinction between actual quitting, and RETIRING from broadcasting, which is what Ron Fairly said he was doing (on FSN regional sports channel). Quitting is usually done when you are DISSATIFIED with the employer you are working for.Fairly in no way has stated publicly that he he was dissatisfied with his broadcast employers. My guess is that his contract has run out and he has no intention of renewing. He is parting on good terms from what I gather in the news;hence RETIRING.(Big distinction). |

Hi--pension laws have changed quite a bit. I guess it is depressing broadcasting with the crew he works with and when you do not have a decent product. But then again, Fairly was worthless as an announcer. |

I guess you'all won't have Ron to kick around any more. As for me I'll miss him. He was a great player with a lot of knowledge about baseball. And by the way you're not. Hie is a genuinely nice guy that liked his job. The Mariners have been a real bad team for the majority of their history and it was probably pretty hard for Ron to deal with that. I h actually hope they replace him with Hendu, because that will be your punishment for all the years of abuse you've given him. |

He is a terrible play-by-play man, and amazingly trite. Still, he loves the game and is the only one of them who dared point out bad plays by the Ms. I'd much rather have seen Valle or even better, Henderson leave. John B. |

I think Hendu is a nice person, just not a good announcer. Read what the Bay Area papers said when Fairly was run out of San Francisco. No one was sorry to see him leave because he was not up to minimum announcer standards. Fairly was a marginal player that hung on for a long time--I never could figure out why. I do not think he ever hit above .300 and for his career I bet .250-.260. He was not a great player except in his mind. This would be a good chance to clean house in the broadcasting crew and maybe just keep Valle? (that was a joke--except they could use a new crew) None of them deserve to be in a MLB's broadcasting booth. |
