Great performance from Oswalt today. The Astros have been playing
great and I've got a good feeling we'll win two of three in Atlanta and force a playoff game with the Cardinals. The bullpen has pitched great (except Wandy and Borowski) during the streak and the hitting has been fantastic in clutch situations. I like that Garner is treating every game like the 7th game of the World Series and he appears to be making very sound and good managerial decisions. |

Pitchingwise, the Astros have an advantage in game one, a tie in game two, and a disadvantage in game three. The Cards, OTOH, are ata pitching disadvantage Friday and Saturday, and at an advantage on Sunday. Matchup for the Monday game vs the Giants is a wash. Of course, this is just "by the numbers on paper." There is a good chance the Giants will just mail it in on Monday, some chance that Carpenter will continue his awful pitching as of late (or be left in too long by LaRussa), etc. As one person has said on another forum, the Cardinals staff is Carpenter, Wainright and 28 dwarves. If it gets to that, I think the Giants will not just mail it in. Look at how much passion the Pirates showed. There is a strong ethic in baseball that teams in these situations have to make the potential playoff team earn the win. The teams that are more at risk for mailing it in are teams that have a playoff spot clenched and are working to rest players and set up rotations. |
