Tigers Fall, Give Away Division Title

Tigers Waste Golden Opportunity and Fail to Win AL Central, Falling
10-8 to Royals

http://abcnews.go.com/Sports/wireStory?id=2514619

By RON VAMPLE
The Associated Press

DETROIT - The Detroit Tigers wasted a big chance to win the AL Central
on Sunday, blowing a six-run lead and then watching All-Star starter
Kenny Rogers lose in relief 10-8 to the Kansas City Royals in 12
innings.

The loss left the Tigers with the AL wild card, meaning manager Jim
Leyland's crew will open the playoffs Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium
against New York.

Minnesota wound up as the Central champion, and will start the
playoffs at home against Oakland. If the Tigers had won, they would've
finished with an identical 96-66 record as the Twins and Detroit
would've won the division crown because of its 11-8 mark against
Minnesota.

The Tigers loaded the bases with one out in the 11th, but Brandon Inge
and Curtis Granderson both struck out.

In the 12th, Esteban German's RBI single and Emil Brown's bases-loaded
walk off Rogers (17-8) won it for the last-place Royals. Jimmy Gobble
(4-6) was the winning pitcher.

neither the twins nor the tigers have anything to be ashamed of this year.
just because the tigers had a minor collapse at the end of the season
doesn't change the twins outright suckage early on. the yankees are the
real enemy. evil has a name, and it is derek jeter.

Yes! I will agree to that 100%.

I honestly hope the Tigers can beat the Yankees, for many reasons.

my first ball game was at the old met stadium. i was 6 years old and my
granfather brought me to see the twins play the yankees (being a
traditionalist and all). there seemed to be more yank fans in attendance,
but as i looked around, i noticed that that was not the case. they were
merely the loudest, drunkest, and most obnoxious. i generally despise
yankee fans, along with dallas cowboy fans for a different reason. i was at
the 1975 dallas/vikes playoff game. need i say more?

evil, i tells ya.

This isnt meant to be too inflammatory, and i certainly dont want to
take away from what the Tigers did this year, because by all means,
they have been great overall, BUT, they have played .479 baseball since
the allstar break. Why does no one mention this? This isnt a minor
collapse, its a half a season long reversion to being an average team.
Thankfully for you guys, they were the best team in baseball for the
first half.

I think a lot of people have mentioned it, but Tigers fans just
dismissed it and hoped for the best.

I think it was a major collapse, and it lasted for much longer than
just the last couple of weeks.

As a Twins fan, I certainly noticed the trend since the break. ;-)

Also, thankfully for the Tigers, the Twins got off to a poor start.

In the end it all worked itself out the way it should have.

The two names I fear the most in the Yankee lineup are Jeter and Damon.

quite the contrary. It was a case of overachieving for the first four
months. Not a problem. Win or lose in October, they now know what their
weaknesses are.
