Dave Stewart, Andy Van Slyke, Shawon Dunston, Mark Grace, David Bell,
Benito Santiago, Mike Matheny (lot of catchers in here)...

Unusual list. You've mentioned a bunch of guys with no managerial
experience at any level.

David Bell is still an active player, of course, and will become a free
agent again during the offseason. Most likely he'll be seeking another
player contract. Matheny hasn't retired yet either, and it's likely that
he'd at least wait until his current contract expires before moving on
to other challenges.

As a manager I'm sure Mark Grace would work well with the media. But
what he'd do for the Giants we have no clue, except lead the team in
appearances on the Jim Rome show.

Andy Van Slyke has one year of experience as a professional coach,
having been Detroit's first base coach this season under Jim Leyland.
But you'll have to decide whether you'd rather have Andy Van Slyke to
manage the Giants or Barry Bonds to return for another year, because
with their history you can't have both.

Googling "Shawon Dunston" yields very little relevant information other
than an article in the Mercury News from early August mentioning his
name as a possible candidate for managing the Giants but concluding,
"Dunston said he never wanted to manage and looks like he's keeping to
it." Does anyone know what Dunston has been doing to keep himself
occupied since he retired? Not coaching or managing, apparently.

About Benito: it's probably not a good idea for the Giants to hire as
manager a former player who was associated with the BALCO investigation.
That would be your lead story on ESPN if Benito Santiago is hired.
Staff: Bench Coach Armando Rios, Hitting Coach Marvin Benard, and
Pitching Coach Bobby Estalella.

Since his retirement Dave Stewart has been a pitching coach, an
assistant GM, and most recently has been a player agent, and he has
publicly mentioned his disappointment at not being promoted to GM with
the Blue Jays (who hired Ricciardi instead). He seems to want to be a
wheeler-dealer type, not an on-field skipper.

Good thing you're not a GM, Frank. Dave Stewart has shown he has little
to no class since leaving the game. Although I like how he says
WHATEVER is on his mind....no matter how insulting or rude, he's a
loose cannon.

Shawon Dunston is cool, but he's too goofy to manage. Benito? Whaaaat?
Is he even COACHING anywhere? Is Shawon? David Bell? Huh? Are you
like...picking old Giants you like or something?

I too would like to see someone new, but not from your list dude.

What happened to Davey Johnson?

Guys that understand the game. Not too far removed from playing.

You just proved that whatever substance that came out of BALCO doesn't
work.

Dunston has been a spring training instructor for the Cubs for the last
few years, possibly each year in which Baker was the manager. He also
serves as an instructor at youth baseball camps, including Baker's
International Baseball Academy in Sacramento, makes speaking
appearances, and gives the occasional interview. For example he was
interviewed by Jeff Pearlman for his book on Barry Bonds published
earlier this year.

According to baseball-reference.com during his 18-year career Dunston
made more than 24 million dollars. So it's very likely that he doesn't
need any form of employment that he doesn't want.

You forgot:
Kevin Mitchell (now managing in alternative league)
Robby Thompson (why does he not get along with the Giants front
office?)
Omar Visquel (could be a player manager)
Jose Canseco (says he wants to manage)

The only one I'd consider from this list is Mike Matheny.
