Mortal enemies! Cobb didn't like ANYBODY! But He he most hated Ruth!
He called him 'NIGGER' because Ruth had a wide nose like a Negro. On a
barnstorming event he refused to share a room with Ruth "that nigger"
Cobb was always a racist for sure. Cobb was even hated by his Tiger
teamates! So much so that when Nap Lajoie won the batting ave crown in
1912 on the last day of the season EVERY Tiger signed a 'congrats'
telegram to him! But here's the REAL story! Ruth for some reason in
1933 after Cobb had retired went up to his house in Georgia just to
drink with Cobb, the only thing they had in comman. Imagin Ruth and
Cobb sitting on a porch drinking hard liquere and Talking BASEBALL! No
one was there BUT DAMN Don't we wish WE were ALL there?! THE two BEST
players of their Time! Maybe ALL time!

Some of them unfairly. He started the tradition of swinging two bats to
make the one at the AB feel lighter. Sounds like a fine tradition now,
but it sure looked cocky to all his teammates.

Sure, some thought he was an ass. Most just felt bad for the guy.


I don't believe Ty Cobb signed it, and he was a Tiger in 1912. In
addition, Ty Cobb got the last laugh: IIRC, he won every batting title
from 1908 to 1919 except for, like two (ESPN and a few other places
screw up the stats, but he did).

post often to this NG and give us Indians fans something to read, but I
recommend you brush up on your history. As I said above, Cobb and Ruth
got along by the end of their careers (I mean c'mon here, no one could
hate Babe Ruth. The guy was so likable).

They were sitting on the porch, drinking and talking about baseball in
1933, because they were both shut out from baseball. Ruth and Cobb had
one very important thing in common: they both wanted to stay active in
baseball after they retired but were both unable to do so: Cobb because
of his attitude and Ruth because he was a slacker. Cobb, with as
intelligent as he was, was at the height of his mental powers and had
nothing to do with them. Ruth was winding down from his popularity
binge and had a massive hangover. They were decent friends at that
time, and had this important fact in common.


I do wish I was there They were the best players of their time, but
I wouldn't say that they were the best players of all-time. Of course,
that opens up a whole 'nother argument which I don't want to have here.

career was winding down is acurate! Nowhere did I say they were STILL
mortal enemies in the 30s when they drank that night at Cobb's house in
Georgia. But those who nit pick will not be swayed by explainations so
I'm probably wasting my time here!

popular baseball myth. Nit-picking is pointing out grammar / spelling

No, you didn't say they were still mortal enemies. I was putting a
whole lot of history behind a simple event, something some people might
want to read. The whole thing makes sense in a historical context, so I
was providing the context. You might want to consider being a bit less
sensitive to replies


As I said above, nit-picking is garbage that doesn't matter. I was
adding some history and explaining some events, which I do believe
matters to your comment. Again, I'm not saying you're wrong, just
shedding some light on the "Cobb hated Ruth to the core" myth.
