Someone says the Daily News reported it. How about Torre as Francona's
bench coach next year? Really stick it to TEE |

Yes, it's in the Daily News. Mr. Torre, according to the story, is being urged to quit to save face, and will be offered a job within the organization. If not, he will be fired. Lou Piniella will be the likely replacement (though some are talking up Joe Girardi). If this report is true, then I want to congratulate Mr. Torre on a brilliant, Hall of Fame-worthy run as Yankees manager. I understand why he's being pushed out and think the Yankees probably need a change at this point, though I'm not sure Piniella is the answer. But there are few figures in sports whom I admire more than Mr. Torre. He and Mr. Francona, IMHO, are class acts and true gentlemen, and I would never say anything bad about either of them. I wish Mr. Torre and his family nothing but the best in the future. He was one hell of an adversary for the Red Sox and the rest of baseball. -Bismo. |

I wouldn't mind seeing Lou Piniella (or one of several others who are available) in Boston. I also think Mr Francona is a nice guy but I think he was lucky in 2004 rather than talented. |

Francona makes a lot of bizarre decisions. However, I think he managed brilliantly in the 2004 playoffs, if not perfectly. It's not luck that team held together, or thought they even had a chance. In that respect, he deserves a lot of credit as a motivator and leader. |

Considering the source, I'll wait a bit to be sure if it is true. Torre is classy and is a quiet center to the NYY storm. I don't find myself second guessing him a lot of the time for his in-game stuff, but I do think he is not the best choice for a youth movement. At this point, I'd be happy to have Piniella as the NYY manager. I'd think there would be some better choices. I'd think knowledgeable NYY fans would not be happy about Lou. I do think he improved as a manager with TB and now seems okay at preserving the pitching staff. -McDuck |

If this is true (and Madden has excellent sources within the Yankee organization), a Sox fan ought to rejoice. First, it means the halcyon days of Cashman controlling the organization went down the drain. Second, I've seen the idiot make some of the most idiotic managerial decisions known in history (including some of Terry Bevington ones). Lou had Donnie play third base THREE TIMES (and no Donnie isn't as ambidextrous as Greg Harris). To cap off that great joke, Piniella on a whim played Winfield TWICE at 3B and while Dave might have been one of the greatest athletes in the history of baseball he had never played third base in his life (not even little league). He looked so scared that I thought he was a hockey goalie without any protective equipment. For every NYY basher of Joe who secondguessed his bullpen management (re: Tom Gordon in the postseason), I don't see how Lou is any better. He allowed Rhodes to face Justice in 2000 and he made the same move against Bernie who had hit Rhodes even more. |
