According to first YES and then ESPN. The suggestion was that George
deferred to cooler heads. I think as a Sox fan I'd rather the Boss was still deciding these things. -- DON !!! GOING BASIC !!! GO 200SEVEN BOSTON RED SOX !!! |

They did the right thing. One year left, why not keep him? It's not really his fault they lost. |

Too bad...I would have loved to see that team managed by Piniella. If nothing else it sure would be entertaining. |

They reported months ago that George had stepped aside and turned it over to his son and a son-in-law. |

It was still George's decision. Though it wouldn't surprise me if he was talked out of firing Torre. It wasn't his son or son-in-law that issued a statement the other day. |

Sarge says:
<<They reported months ago that George had stepped aside and turned it over to his son and a son-in-law.>> This incident makes it sound much less like George is completely out of the loop. Probably he's not so involved in day to day stuff. I'm betting if he says "jump", the others, son and son-in-law included would ask "how high". -- DON !!! GOING BASIC !!! http://www.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9718164 I had expressed a fair dose of skepticism about the Daily News story saying Torre was about to be fired. But I do think this coming year is probably the last. Like Dano, I think that Piniella as manager would be good for the RS. And now the moving of A-Rod seems to have abated some. Well, somehow the NYY fans are going to have to settle on a scapegoat. -McDuck |

Yep. You were definitely right on the mark with this one. (If you had asked me the odds of Bill Madden being wrong and George King, who didn't even put Pedro on his 1999 MVP ballot, being right on a story....) Mr. Torre sounded really worn out during his interview with Mike and the Mad Dog today, and the missive from Steinbrenner was pretty pointed and filled with veiled threats. I hate to say it, but Mr. Torre seems like a real lame duck. Geez, a bad April could turn Mr. Torre into the next Yogi Berra (who was fired once after little more than a dozen games). I agree on Piniella, but do disagree a tad on A-Rod. I think he'd be more likely to stay if Piniella took over. With Mr. Torre back, and Jeter a happy captain again, the same issues remain for A-Rod, and I really do think they'll find a way to move him. But I was wrong about the firing, and will be wrong many times again, so who knows? -Bismo. |
